Parts of Speech

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun, and
describe it .

الصفة هي الكلمة التي توضح الإسم وتصفه .

(a big dog).

Adjectives can be one word or a group of words.

قد تكون الصفة كلمة أو مجموعة من الكلمات .

نهايات الصفة الشائعة :

Some common adjective endings are :
-ive, -ous, -y, -ful,-ent

There are 2 basic positions for adjectives:

1- before the noun e.g I like big cars .

2- after certain verbs e.g My car is big .

The adjective can be :

Determiner- محدد many, much ,etc.
Opinion - رأي smart, cheap, etc.
Size - مقاس big, thin, tall, etc.
Shape - شكل circle, square, etc.
Age - سن old, young ,etc.
Color - لون yellow, green, etc.
Origin - أصل American, , Asian, African, etc.
Material - مادة cotton , plastic, etc.
Purpose/Qualifier - هدف computer table .

Comparative Adjectives :

When we talk about two things,

we can "compare" them. We can see if they are

the same or different. We can use comparative

adjectives to describe the differences .

عندما نتحدث عن شيئين لنقارنهما نستخدم صفات المقارنة .. لنوضح الإختلاف بينهما .

e.g

A1 a2

A1 is bigger than a2.

The Rules for using Comparative Adjectives

Than" is usually used after the comparative adjective.

دائما نتسخدم than عندما نقارن بين شيئين

-er is added to the end of a 1-syllable adjective

تضاف er للصفة التي تتكون من مقطع واحد

cold - colder
tall - taller
e.g

The winter is colder than the summer

-er is added to the end of an adjective ends in –y.

تضاف أيضا للصفة التي تنتهي بِـ

y

early - earlier
happy - happier
e.g

I came home earlier than my sister.

"More" or "less" is used for Adjectives that have 2 _3 or more syllables .

تستخدم

More & less

مع الصفات التي تتكون من مقطعين أو ثلاثة أو أكثر

honest - more honest
expensive – more expensive
e.g

The policemen are more honest than criminals.

Adjectives that end in -e, only -r is added to end of the adjective.

يضاف لها e الصفات التي تنتهي بِـ

فقطr

nice - nicer
safe - safer
e.g

My house is nicer than your house

Adjective that end with a consonant, vowel, consonant - the last consonant is doubled.

الصفات التي تنتهي بحرف ساكن ثم حرف علة ثم حرف ساكن يضاعف الحرف الأخير

big -bigger

hot -hotter

e.g

My house is bigger than, my sister's house.

Superlative Adjectives :

are used to compare at least 3 things, or groups.

When we want to state that something

is the most or something is the least.

الصفات العليا تستخدم للمقارنة بين ثلاثة أشياء فأكثر

لتوضيح شيء ما الأفضل أو الأقل

e.g

A b c

A is the biggest.

English Superlative Adjectives Rules

-est is added to the end of a 1-syllable adjective .

تضاف للصفات التي تتكون من est

مقطع واحد

cold - coldest
small - smallest
e.g

This winter is the coldest that I can remember

2 syllable Adjectives the -y is change to -i. and add -est to the end of the adjective .

المقاطع التي تنتهي بـ ِ y

تتحول إلى I ويضاف لها

est

early - earliest

e.g

Today is the earliest that I came home all week

"most" or "least" are placed before adjectives

that have 2 -3 or more syllables .

Most & least

تستخدم مع الصفات التي تتكون من مقطعين أو ثلاثة أو أكثر .

honest - most honest

difficult –least difficult .

The policeman are the most honest people that I know.

Adjectives ending in -e,

only -est is added to end of the adjective.

الصفات التي تنتهي بِـ -e

-st يضاف لها

nice -nicest

safe -safest

e.g

Your family is the nicest that I have ever met

.

*.توجد بعض الصفات الشاذة مثل :

good - better - best

bad - worse -worst
much - more - most
little - less - least

لكن اعتقد بان الدرس الثالث فيه بعض النقاط الغير مفهومة ومن حقنا نفهمها قبل لا ندخل على درس جديد !!

بس بسسآل سؤال \
الان اذا انتهت اكلمة بـ ful تصبح " صفة " يعني مثل كلمة successful تعتبر صفة ؟

بعدين برضو تنتهي بـ ent طيب .. ففي كلمة goverment وتعني حكومة .. فهل هي هنا كذلك [ صفة ] لانها انتهت بـ net ..
